A New World War Could Result Form Of Fight For Technology, Says Alibaba's Jack Ma

A third world war could result because of a fight for technology, warned Chinese billionaire and Alibaba founder Jack Ma. History has shown that global conflicts take place primarily because of technological innovation, he said.

"The first world war was because of the first technology revolution," he said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. "The second technology revolution caused the second world war."

"This is the third technology revolution — we're coming," Ma added.

This is however not the first time that such a warning has been given by this business leader. In 2017 he had said that World War III can be likely be caused by the developments in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Elon Musk, the US billionaire and owner of electric car making company Tesla had also made a similar comment last year when he had warned that World War III can be caused by the race between governments to become leaders in the area of AI.

In Davos this time, Ma also spoke about the issue of robots and AI and the importance of education attacked to it. He said that it is critical that those things that are not able to be done by machines should be able to be done by the young population.

However, eve though he issued the warning about technology race among government and the development of technologies such as machine learning and artificial intelligence, Alibaba's executive chairman said that he still believed that technology is a good thing and is beneficial for mankind.

The pointed out the possibility of use of new and fast developing technology in the field of climate change which can help change the lives of people through positive benefits. He said for example that fossil fuels can be used "efficiently" and "smartly" by experts with the help of data.

While stating that he still believed that technology is "great" for humanity, he also warned that it would not be enough for mankind to only being not evil

"I'm not a technology person, but I'm a believer that technology is great for human beings," Ma said. "And as a technical company, don't be evil is not enough."

"You should do good things for the world, do good things for the future and believe in young people."

Google had used the phrase "don't be evil'" as a motto and has been included in the internal code of conduct of the company since 2000. Last year, the company taken removed from its code of conduct more of the mentions of the phrase even though the phrase still can be found in the last sentence of the internal code of conduct of Google.
