Nvidia And Malaysia's YTL Power Will Collaborate On A $4.3 Billion AI Research Initiative

In a $4.3 billion investment pact, Malaysian conglomerate YTL's utilities unit will collaborate with American technology behemoth Nvidia to develop artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in the Southeast Asian nation.

According to a statement released by YTL Power International on Friday, the first phase is anticipated to be operational by mid-2024.

Earlier on Friday, there were rumours citing sources stating that Nvidia and YTL were in advanced talks to collaborate on AI infrastructure, which would include cloud computing and supercomputers. The project would be housed at a data centre in the southern state of Johor.

As per the agreement, YTL Power International will use Nvidia's AI cloud computing platform to create a big language model in Malay, and the firms will work together to build Malaysia's fastest supercomputers utilising Nvidia AI chips.

The project will be housed at YTL's data centre park in Kulai, Johor, the release verified.

The alliance is expected to support Malaysia's aspirations to become a major player in semiconductor production as well as the rapidly expanding AI ecosystem in Southeast Asia. Global semiconductor giants like Intel and Infineon have increased their multibillion dollar investments in the nation in recent years.

"Malaysia is an important hub for Southeast Asia computing infrastructure, which requires access to land, facilities and power, and YTL could play a great role in that," Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told reporters earlier in the day, without directly confirming the deal.

On the social media site X, which was formerly known as Twitter, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that YTL and Nvidia will be collaborating on a project that will require an investment of 20 billion ringgit ($4.29 billion).

"The decision to invest in Malaysia is a clear signal that foreign investors, especially technology giants, continue to make the country a primary destination of choice in this region," Anwar said, following a meeting with Huang and YTL Power managing director Yeoh Seok Hong in Malaysia's administrative capital Putrajaya.
