Teenage Climate Activist Greta Thunberg Wants Ot Trademark Her Name

Teenage Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is looking to trademark her own name as well as that of her movement as she says that the names are being misused by ‘impostors’ and marketers. This trademark however is being sought with the aim of achieving pure noble and altruistic causes.

This was announced by Thunberg in an Instagram post on Wednesday. in the post she urged her followers, numbering over 500,000, to be “extremely suspicious” if they are contacted by anyone posing as Thunberg. She recalled that there have been incidents of such things being done by many impersonators and frauds who have tried to use her name “in order to communicate with high profile people, politicians, media, artists etc.”

The ‘Fridays For Future’ and ‘Skolstrejk för klimatet,’ the Swedish name of her “climate strike” movement, are also intended to be protected through trademark by her in addition to applying for a trademark in her own name, Thunberg said. This measure is being taken by her to prevent unrelated third parties from using them in advertising and fundraising.

Thunberg said: “Fridays For Future is a global movement founded by me. It belongs to anyone taking part in it, above all the young people. It can – and must – not be used for individual or commercial purposes.”

She added that her parents had recently registered a foundation which will be “strictly nonprofit of course and there are no interests in philanthropy.” The foundation is yet to start functioning.
“It is just something that is needed for handling money (book royalties, donations, prize money etc) in a completely transparent way,” she said.

The foundation’s goals will be to “promote ecological, climatic and social sustainability as well as mental health”, she said in an apparent contradiction to her previous statement.

In 2019, the 17 year old Thunberg was named as the person of the year by the TIME magazine. Thunberg shot to fame after she started a Friday school boycott to protest climate change in August 2018.

However there have been criticisms of her after a documentary on her surfaced recently where footage seemed to suggest that her rise to fame was not completely organic. Critics seemed to suggest, based on the flow of the documentary, that her protests were scripted carefully y climate activist Ingmar Rentzhog who is a friend of her parents.

In another revelation about Thunberg;’s account Facebook showed earlier this month that none of the posts made in the name of Thunberg on the platform had been done by her but had instead were posted by her father and Adarsh Prathap, an Indian climate activist.

The latest move by Thunberg would allow her to file legal suits against anyone – including companies, who use her name without her permission and not in line with the values she and her movement professes.
