The Largest Military Exporters in the World


Leaders of arms exports for 2011-2015 were the United States, Russia, China, France and Germany. They had 74% of the supply of arms in the world. Compared with the years 2006-2010, top 5 exporters increased their arms sales by 15%. Also, the supply of arms has significantly increased from China’s side. The last five years, China occupied sixth position in the ranking of arms merchants, but now Beijing has managed to overtake France, Germany and the UK taking third place, right behind the leaders - the US and Russia. Because of this, London has been relegated to sixth place.



The top five importing countries were India, Saudi Arabia, China, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Australia. These data are presented in the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)’s report, published on Monday, February 22nd.

In 2011-2015, compared to the previous five-year period, arms imports has increased in Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Middle East. There was a sharp drop in supplies to Europe; imports in the countries of South and North America has significantly reduced in the volume.

United States proceeded leading as an arms exporter during 2011-2015. They accounted for 33% of world trade. Compared with the years 2006-2010, Washington's exports grew by 27%. US supplied weapons to 96 countries – this is the largest number of export destinations among all countries - weapons dealers. Saudi Arabia was the largest buyer of US military equipment. The country had 9.7% of all US exports, followed by the United Arab Emirates - 9.1%. Among US weapons’ purchasers are also other Middle East countries: in total, the region accounted for 41% of exports of the United States arms. Countries in Asia and Oceania are behind a little: they accounted for 40% of total sales of American weapons. In Europe, the supply accounted for only 9.9% of deliveries. Mostly, Washington sold military aircraft (59% of total exports). At the end of 2015, the United States had a large number of not yet realized export contracts on arms supplies, including contracts with nine countries for the supply of 611 F-35 - fighter-bombers of the fifth generation.

Russia took second place among the countries - exporters of weapons. Compared with the years 2006-2010, deliveries of Russian military equipment increased by 28%. Nevertheless, the SIPRI points out, exports in 2014 and 2015 has been significantly lower than in 2011-2013, almost on the last five-year level. In 2011-2015, Moscow supplied weapons to 50 countries, as well as TO insurgents in Ukraine, said the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. The largest buyer of Russian arms became India with 39% of Russian arms sold volume. Second and third place was shared by China and Vietnam - 11% each. If we take a breakdown by region, 68% of all delivered Russian military equipment went to Asia and Oceania, 11% - to Africa, the Middle East countries - 8.2%. Europe has bought 6.4% of the total Russian weapons sold in the last five years. At the same time, deliveries in Europe increased by 264%, mainly thanks to Azerbaijan purchasing Russian weapons by (the country relates to Europe according to the Institute,): it accounted for 4.9% of the total Russian exports weapons (in 2006-2011, Baku had bought just 0.7% of total Russian weapons volume sold).

Compared with the previous five years, the Chinese arms exports increased by 88%, which elevzted Beijing to the third place among the countries - leaders in sales of military equipment. The share of China in the global arms trade has risen from 3.6 to 5.9%. In 2011-2015, China delivered the equipment in 37 states. However, 75% of all exports went to Asia and Oceania (delivery volumes compared to the previous five-year period in the region increased by 139%). The main buyer of Chinese military technology became Pakistan (35% of the sold amount), followed by Bangladesh (20%) and Myanmar (16%). SIPRI points out that all three major buyers of Chinese weapons border with India - the main importer of weapons in the region and in the world.

In 2011-2015, 153 countries imported weapons as a whole. The top 5 buyers were India, Saudi Arabia, China, UAE and Australia, with 34% of the amount of weapons sold in the world. Asia and Oceania bought 46% of military equipment, followed by the Middle East countries (25%), Europe (11%), South and North America (9.6%) and Africa (8%). SIPRI also indicates that there were eight insurgent movements, but they accounted for only 0.02% of global arms purchases among the major buyers of weapons.
