The Largest iPhones Yet Are Being Planned For 2018 By Apple: Media Reports

According to media reports published very recently, later this year, Apple Inc. could be releasing three new smartphones which include the largest veer iPhone. It is touted that this device would compete with the largest gadget from rival Samsung’s flagship smartphone, according to media reports and based on information from people familiar with the products.

In addition, an upgraded version of the current iPhone X with the same screen size and less costly model of it that has only some of the most important features of the iPhone X.

In recent years, there has been a dearth of new and innovative features by smartphone makers and some analysts believe that this launch could rekindle the old screen size war among smartphones. According to research firm IDC, smartphone makers have not been able to lure customers resulting in a drop of 0.1 per cent in sale last year while shipments increased by only 1.9 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively for Apple and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.

The reports said that this fall Apple could announce the new phones and the company is already tests in production with suppliers.  But there could be changes in plans by Apple, the reports said.

There were no comments made by Apple to the news reports.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 with a screen that 6.2-inch (15.75 cm) was announced on Monday by the South Korean smartphone maker and the reports said that the new iPhone could have a screen close to 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) in length. The Samsung Galaxy S9 would be larger than the Samsung Note 8 with a 6.3-inch screen. And it is possible that the announcement of Samsung about a new Note series device could be made at a time when Apple announces its latest iPhones because the former typically announces the new Note series launches in the fall.

The reported trio of new iPhones was “a very logical extension of the product line” for Apple: “One bigger, one cheaper, and one upgrade to the existing iPhone X”, said Bob O‘Donnell, head of Technalysis Research.

For the fiscal second quarter ending in March, Apple forecast not so good revenues of between $60 billion to $62 billion and there were a number of media reports that identified low demand for iPhone X units not meeting expectations during the run-up to the Christmas holidays.

Consumers are being enticed into replacing their older phones with newer ones earlier than they would have otherwise done with phones with specific features even as most smartphone makers report flat sales globally.

“The whole nature of smartphone purchase decisions have changed,” O‘Donnell said. “It’s not about what is the newest, greatest model. It’s about when is my phone so old I need to upgrade, and what’s available when I need a new one.”

According to reports, the regular sized iPhones is also being planned to be updated by Apple. The next-generation A12 processor is anticipated to be used in those phones and will still have stainless steel edges.

It is however not clear whether any of the current iPhone models would be cut by Apple. For example, for developing markets in India, the company has retained the older models such as the iPhone SE for sale for a very long time.
